Making Change

Today we started learning about change in math.  Several of the students didn't understand the concept.  Please work with your child on change from a dollar and five dollars.  A great way to do this is let them pretend to be the cashier and give change back from some amount.  Make it a game.  Thanks for you help.

Look at what we have been doing

Follow the link to see what Ms. Cade's and Mrs. Davis' third grade classes have been up to.  We know the continents and oceans by song.

First Week of Third Grade

The first week of third grade is over.  We have worked hard on procedures in and around the school.  We have learned the 7 continents and 5 oceans.  We worked on place value.  We started Daily 5 with Read to Self and Word Work.  Draft books, math journals, and poetry journals were handed out.  A very busy week for everyone.  Can't wait for the next.

My Favorite Beginning of the Year Books

Each year I try to start with First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg.

I love this book because I can remember what it is like to start a new year with new people in the class. Not sure if you will have a friend in there with you. The kids love that even teachers feel nervous about the first day. As a follow up activity, my class makes a First Day Jitters book. They write about what they were nervous about or what their first day was like. We compile these and add their pictures to the book. They continue to read this book throughout the year.

Summer

Well, half of our summer break is over. Can you believe that in less that 3 weeks I will be back at school working to get things ready. There have been some big changes for me this year. I am moving up to third grade for the 2011-2012 school year. I have already been working on getting ready. Studying and reading lots of information to make sure I am prepared. Good news is that I will get to see all my kiddos more often. Hope you are having an awesome summer!

Love,
Ms. Cade
